Dealing with threats from strangers online

Lately, I’ve been getting weird messages from a fake profile that threatens to share some private stuff unless I pay up. I haven’t shared anything explicit, but the way they talk really creeps me out. Has anyone else experienced this? How do you protect yourself from something like this without panicking or making it worse?
